Origin of the group:
The musicians in the "Friday Nite Band" sought me out at California Institute of the Arts, created this ensemble and wanted to improvise and perform the music I compose. There is no greater tribute than that. All of these fine players have websites, Myspace pages, Facebook, you name it sites and are the new face of our music. These fabulous musicians are equally at home performing with complex charts, no charts, standards, music from other cultures, they are today's new breed of musicians. I am very proud that they asked me to join them to explore and create music together. Our primary group focus became the interpretation of my compositions with an emphasis on improvisation. Eventually the "Friday Nite Band" morphed into another ensemble with the addition of Dan Rosenboom on trumpet and there will be future recordings of that sextet soon. At the present there are other recordings at vinnygolia.com with an earlier version of the sextet that are posted for listening.
